Monstergolven, freak waves, rogue waves

Plotselinge golf die minimaal 2x hoger is als de significante
golfhoogte. Deze watermuren vormen een regelrechte bedreiging
voor zeeschepen en boorplatformen.
In onderstaande 5 filmpjes wordt in een BBC documentaire naar de
oorzaak van dit fenomeen gezocht. In de andere filmpjes zie je
o.a. hoe het schepen kan vergaan en opnamen gemaakt in een
cruise schip.

Het Maxwave project doet onderzoek voor de Europese Commissie
naar het fenomeen monstergolven. In de VS wordt onderzoek
uitgevoerd door de Universiteit van Miami Rosenstiel school.
Haar CSTARS centrum is de enige in de VS die realtime satalietdata
kan ontvangen welke monstergolven detecteert in de zuidelijke
Atlantische Oceaan. Als onderdeel van het Maxwave project, bouwt
de Rosenstiel school een Freakwave atlas die wordt gebruikt voor
scheepvaartroutes en offshore constructieplanning.
Naar schatting verdwijnen er wereldwijd 1 a 2 schepen per dag of
raken zwaar beschadigd door Freak waves.

Monster waves, freak waves, rogue waves

Sudden wave that is at least 2 times higher as the significant
wave height and a real threat to large ships, ocean liners
and oil platforms.

The Maxwave project does research to freak waves for the
European Commission. In the US research is done by the
University of Miami Rosenstiel School.
It's CSTARS centre is the only US institute that receives and analyzes
realtime satelite data about freakwaves from the Southern Atlantic.
As part of the MaxWave project, Rosenstiel School is building a
WaveAtlas that will map the occurence of rogue waves to be used
as a basis for ship routing and offshore construction planning.
Estimating worldwide every day 1 or 2 ships disappaer or become
severely damaged by Freak waves.

Golfklimaat site van het RIKZ

Hier kunt u informatie vinden over het golfklimaat in het Nederlandse deel van de Noordzee. Dit kan iets eenvoudigs zijn als de gemiddelde golfhoogte ergens voor de kust of een meer complexe simultane kansverdeling van enkele golfparameters. De golfklimaat site biedt u de mogelijkheid allerlei eigenschappen van het golfklimaat in het Nederlandse kustgebied uit te laten rekenen, waarbij u zelf de specificaties opgeeft.

De beelden uit 1989 waarop vuurtorenwachter Théodore Malgorne op de vuurtoren 'La Jument' ternauwernood aan indrukwekkende golven ontsnapt, zijn wereldberoemd. Ook de beelden van de zeesleper Abeille Flandre ( zie ook de site van Patly productions en Sea-rescue.de) in een vliegende storm zijn zeer spectaculair. Het complete nautische archief is op de site aanwezig en kan online besteld worden.

Veel foto's zijn gemaakt in Bretagne, Finistere, een regio met vele vuurtorens (langs de kust, op eilanden en rotsen in zee). De vuurtorens aan land hadden de bijnaam 'het paradijs', die op de eilanden 'het vagevuur' en de vuurtorens in zee 'de hel'. Beroemd zijn de 3 stormeilanden:

Kustvisie.nl. Op deze website vindt u informatie over het project Kustvisie Zuid-Holland. Door klimaatverandering stijgt de zeespiegel. Ook de kracht van de golven neemt toe. Dit heeft gevolgen voor de kustveiligheid in de toekomst. In de Zuid-Hollandse kust zijn zes plekken die op termijn niet meer voldoen aan de veiligheidsnorm: de zogenaamde 'zwakke schakels'.

Het project Kustvisie Zuid-Holland heeft als doel een duurzame versterking van deze zwakke schakels. De kust moet daarnaast ook aantrekkelijk zijn om te wonen, te werken en te recreëren.

LOICZ, Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone is een project van het International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) en het International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP)

LOICZ is een internationaal onderzoeksproject waarin wetenschappers uit de hele wereld, die onderzoek verrichten naar de veranderingen in de biologische, chemische en fysieke veranderingen van kustgebieden, sinds 1993 betrokken zijn. Sinds 2003 heeft LOICZ haar onderzoeksgebied uitgebreid naar sociale, politieke en economische wetenschappen om de menselijke dimensie van het kustgebied in kaart te brengen.

De onderzoeksresultaten worden gebruikt om de rol die mensen spelen in kustgebieden, te verkennen, hun kwetsbaarheid voor veranderende omgevingen te onderzoeken en de mogelijkheden om de kustgebieden te beschermen voor toekomstige generaties.

Het hoofddoel van LOICZ is “om de kennis, het begrip en de voorspelling die nodig zijn om kustgemeenschappen te beoordelen, te anticiperen en te reageren op de interactie van wereldwijde veranderingen en lokale druk die de kustverandering bepalen.”

Onder de noemer 'Nederland leeft met Water' zijn de gezamenlijke waterbeheerders Rijk, provincies, gemeenten en waterschappen op 11 februari 2003 gestart met een campagne over het nieuwe waterbeleid voor de 21ste eeuw. Een nieuw waterbeleid is nodig omdat ons klimaat verandert. Om gevolgen van de veranderingen van het klimaat, bijvoorbeeld een stijging van de zee, hevige regenbuien en perioden van droogte, op te vangen zijn de waterbeheerders nu al bezig.

Zeeland ligt voor een groot deel op of onder de zeespiegel. In 1953 waren de dijken slecht en laag. De kans op een overstroming was toen 1 x per 80 jaar. Dankzij de stormvloedkering is die kans nu minder dan 1 x per 4.000 jaar. Benut je kans om dit bouwwerk van binnen en buiten te bezoeken. Beton met een garantie van 200 jaar omringt je, stalen deuren van 45 meter breed verheffen zich en het getij raast onder je door. Hier moet je geweest zijn, dit moet je gezien hebben! Dominique Pipat en zijn bedrijf Patly producties hebben zich de laatste 25 jaar gespecialiseerd in nautische documentaires en vele jacht races, zoals de "whitbread around the world races 81/82 with eric tabarly", de "boc challenge solitary " rond de wereld, de "vendée globe solitary" rond de wereld zonder begeleiding en de record oversteek over de Atlantische oceaan met Eric Tabarly's trimaran.

Patly Producties heeft films gemaakt over alle aspecten van de zee zoals de "bering sea crab fishing industry", de meest gevaarlijke vorm van visserij ter wereld, de U.S. Coast Guard en een documentaire over de "abeille flandre", een Franse zeesleper die alleen naar buiten gaat boven windkracht 10. Deze indrukwekkende documentaire laat beelden zien van het schip in een zeer zware storm (12 Bft) bij Bretagne. Verder wordt er aandacht besteedt aan het harde leven op de Bretonse eilandjes "ile de ouessant" en "ile de sein". Deze eilandjes zijn beroemd om hun vuurtorens in zee. Ik heb tevens een link opgenomen naar de franse fotograaf Jean Guichard die hier prachtige foto's van heeft gemaakt en deze als posters en kalenders aanbiedt op zijn site. In oktober 2001 ben ik zelf een week in dat gebied geweest, zie o.a. de vuurtoren foto's. Patly producties heeft veel ervaring opgedaan in het maken van films van de Noordpool tot aan het Antarctische ijs en zo een bibliotheek opgebouwd die de oceanen in al haar diversiteit laat zien.

Een storm - 9 landen - 24 surfers , the Redbull stormchase

In mei introduceerde Redd Bull het idee voor de meest extreme windsurf show ooit. Zes maanden later beukte de zwaarste storm van dit jaar op de Noord Europese kustlijnen en werden de surfers op hun wenken bediend.

In 9 landen bedwongen 24 surfers hun lokale spots onder de meest radicale omstandigheden. De Red Bull Storm Chase was geen competitie, het was de uitdaging van man tegen de natuur. 20 december verschijnen de beelden op DVD.

“You will experience the most extreme windsurfing show ever” – was the promising slogan in the trailer in may 2006 to introduce the idea of the Red Bull Storm Chase to the windsurf community. Six month later the heaviest Atlantic low of the year approached the Northern European coastline, hit the beaches with full force, the storm alert went off and the Red Bull Storm Chase was on full fire!

22 fearless windsurfers plus two guest stars sent out to Scotland by our partner Quatro were facing the ultimate challenge on their local spots. The idea was to watch out for the biggest storm this autumn and to have two windsurfers in each country ready to go out any time. On the day it striked each rider had to face the most radical conditions alone, on his homespot. The Red Bull Storm Chase was no competition, it was the pure challenge of man vs nature. The outcome of this happening will be released on DVD on 20 december.
