De storm trok vanaf de Azoren via Schotland en de Faroer eilanden richting Scandinavië. In deze tijd van moderne radio en sateliet navigatie (GPS) is het haast niet voor te stellen, maar er is ooit een tijd geweest dat men niet wist waar men was zodra een schip achter de horizon verdween. Men ging ervan uit dat het land dat dit probleem zou oplossen, de wereldeconomie zou regeren. Het probleem was navigatie op zee, hoe wist je waar je was als je schip achter de horizon verdween? Hoe bepaalde je de lengtegraad? Terwijl de adel uit die tijd het antwoord in navigatie op de sterren zocht, zwoegde een Engelse klokkenmaker, John Harrison, 31 jaar lang om het probleem op te lossen. Zijn elegante oplossing maakte hem een onwaarschijnlijke held en blijft de basis voor de meest moderne navigatievormen in de wereld van vandaag. In this age of modern radio and satellite navigation (GPS) hard to imagine, but there was a time when no one knew their position once a ship disappeared over the horizon. It was one of humankind's most epic quests - a technical problem so complex that it challenged the best minds of its time, a problem so important that the nation that solved it would rule the economy of the world. The problem was navigation by sea—how to know where you were when you sailed beyond the sight of land - establishing your longitude. While the gentry of the 18th Century looked to the stars for the answer, an English clockmaker, John Harrison, toiled 31 years to solve the problem. Op Youtube kwam ik een documentaire tegen over de 'plastic vuilnisbelt' in de Grote oceaan' ook wel de 'kunststofarchipel' of 'plastic soep' genoemd. Als gevolg van bepaalde zeestromingen is daar een drijvende vuilnisbelt ontstaan met een geschatte omvang van 34x Nederland en een gewicht van 3,5 miljoen ton! |
