 Mega Tsunamis, Iminami

Een Mega Tsunami is de veel grotere versie van de Tsunami. Ze worden niet,
zoals Tsunami's, veroorzaakt door zeebevingen, maar door gigantische aardverschuivingen
(landslides) of komeetinslagen. In deze BBC documentaire worden plaatsen bezocht
waar Mega Tsunami's zich ooit hebben voorgedaan (Alaska Lituya Bay, Italië Vajont dam,
Washington Spirit Lake).

 Mega Tsunamis, Iminami

A Mega Tsunami is the giant version of the Tsunami. Mega Tsunami's are not caused by earthquakes,
like Tsunami's, but initiated by massive landslides or enormous meteor impacts. In this BBC
documentary places are visited where Mega Tsunami's occured in the past (Alaska Lituya Bay,
Italy Vajont dam, Washington Spirit Lake). Also places are investigated where massive landslides are
expected in the future. One of the most risky places is the Canary island La Palma. In the future
scientist expect a massive landslide of the volcano Cumbre Vieja. It wil start a giant Mega Tsunami
that possibly wil destroy cities on the West coast of the United States.

Scientists have understood the destructive power of tsunami - huge tidal waves - for many centuries. In 1998, over 2000 people were killed by a large wave hitting the coast of Papua, New Guinea. This was caused by an offshore earthquake but scientists have since learned that earthquakes are not the only phenomena triggering tsunami; a huge landslide can cause mega-tsunami. The next mega-tsunami is likely to be caused by a volcanic landslide in the Canary Islands, creating a wall of water that will race across the entire Atlantic ocean at the speed of a jet airliner and devastate the entire East Coast of the United States. The question is: when will it happen?
